A potential Minefield!
As sure as the sun rises everyday, politics will continue to play a major role in the modern office. No matter the environment in which you work, there will be some of office political structure in place. It is therefore important to consider some options to assist you in managing office politics.
- Pay attention.
Always play close attention to the peculiarities of your office culture so you don’t end up putting square pegs in round holes. It is critical to understand the rules of the game and the players involved in it.
- Don’t get involved.
Disagreements at work are unavoidable. Try to avoid taking sides. Whenever you cannot avoid being drawn into a conflict, try to get the warring parties to communicate and find common ground.
- Think We instead of Me.
Be everyone’s cheerleader. Be that annoyingly, affable, always positive person at work who says we are a team, we have to work together for a better result. Try to make yourself the rallying point for everyone in the office.
- No fights
This is an absolute No No. Do not ever fight with your colleagues at work. If you get upset excuse yourself and come back when you are calm and able to speak without the distraction of angry emotions after all you need to see these people every day. Think Zen!
- Your colleagues are people too.
Your office is a melting pot comprised of people from all sorts of backgrounds who are thrown together, usually, in one room for several hours a day everyday! It’s almost like an arranged marriage. Remember to always try to understand the other person’s point of view. It will foster better working relationships.
